Exploring Alabama Chanin: Coming soon!
Alabama Chanin is a genre within the world of sewing that incorporates stenciling, hand-sewing, and applique, onto cotton knit jersey. Natalie Chanin, the founder and creative director of Alabama Chanin has used the combination of the above techniques to create wearable, beautiful garments, home accessories, and more. In this class, we will explore her work, learn how to employ the techniques she uses, and create a bandana. By the end of this class, you will have a solid foundation to explore further Alabama Chanin-esque projects with confidence and ease.
This class is divided into 2 parts; Stenciling & Painting / Sewing & Applique. You are welcome to join us for the whole day (by adding both items below to your cart) - or for part of the day. We strongly encourage you to join us for the whole day to get most out of the class.
In the Stenciling & Painting portion of the class you will learn to (3.5 hours / $75):
+ How to use a hot knife to create your own stencil
+ Discuss and practice mixing paint for your project
+ How to paint on fabric using fabric paints
+ Discussion of design, placement of design on fabric
+ Set the paint for permanence
Materials included in class fee:
+ hot knife, mylar, fabric paint, tools to mix paint, foam brushes
In the Sewing & Applique portion of the class you will learn to (3 hours / $75):
+ Discuss and practice the different stitches employed at Alabama Chanin
+ Discuss the differences and similarities between the 3 books written by Natalie Chanin
+ Discuss and practice sewing durable seams to make long lasting garments
+ Discuss fit of Alabama Chanin garments
+ Tips and tricks for making future garments
+ Embroidery thread or Button & Carpet thread in desired color
Required skills: This can be your first sewing class. No prior sewing skills are necessary.
