Introduction to Sewing Kids Series - Coming Soon!
Instructor: Navarre Miya
During this 8 week series, children (and their accompanying adult) will learn the basics of hand and machine sewing through a project-based approach. The first projects will introduce safety rules, simple hand stitching, sewing machine safety and operation, and creative decision making. Fabric and embellishment choice will be discussed. These projects include a pin cushion or a needle wallet, embellishing and embroidering a handkerchief, and constructing a pillow case.
During the last part of the series, children's confidence will increase as projects become more complex while allowing for a full range of skill-building and creative choice. New stitches will be introduced both by hand as well as on the machine, and hemming, using a pattern, and sizing will be the focus. Projects may include constructing a skirt or pants, making a shoulder bag, and sewing a t-shirt or dress.
We will also be discussing ways to handle feeling frustrated, problem solving, fixing 'mistakes,' and the uniqueness of making projects by hand. Games, songs, and stories will keep classes light and fun while maintaining an emphasis on safety.
