52 Weeks of Socks is a beautiful new book from Laine. The book contains 52 knitting patterns for socks and slippers including two patterns, Lazy Daisy and Mica, designed by Kristine Vejar, co-owner of A Verb for Keeping Warm. Both pairs she designed use Gather, our sport weight yarn made from California-raised Rambouillet wool and Arizona alpaca, and milled in Arizona. If you would like to hear more from the people who raise these materials, or from the person who mills this yarn, check out our podcast Reverberate.
One of Kristine's favorite colorways is Sundappled. To create this colorway, we take marigold petals from our dye garden, and press them into the yarn, resulting in little speckles of gold, orange, and yellow – bright and cheerful colors to bring warmth and a bit of summer magic to a stormy, chilly Winter afternoon.
When approaching the design for these socks, Kristine wanted to highlight the Sundappled colorway, so created a simple stockinette sock. But she always likes to throw a little something in - so thought this pattern would be a fun way to teach people how to do an afterthought heel. This technique provides a way to add small details like a contrasting heel to go with a contrasting toe - to make the socks pop! These socks are knit toe-up using the magic loop method.
Due to the use of a thicker yarn, these socks are a quick knit and are cozy to wear around the house. Just imagine sitting next to the fire, wearing your cozy new hand-knit socks, a big cup of tea, reading. This yarn is warm and soft – the perfect cozy yarn to knit and wear on a cold winter day.

When working with yarn dyed with indigo, it is common and natural for the blue dye to rub off on one’s hands while sewing. This is called crocking. Although the goods have been washed, it takes pressured contact to release the extra indigo dye. Your handwork is part of the indigo dyeing process. The blue dye can be removed with hot water and soap. From working closely with indigo dyed materials through the making process, typically, the excess dye has been removed, and the crocking will cease.
