Designed for Year 12 (2021-2022) Pro-Verbial Shawl Club, Peach Pit is a stranded colorwork shawl with a modern motif reminiscent of cut peaches. Wear as a shoulder wrap or stylish bandana! Knit in the round with paired increases to create a triangle, an i-cord bind-off finishes the widest and final edge. Steek stitches at the side edges, once cut, are unraveled to create a festive fringe. Knit with three colors, the background contrasting markedly from the two-color ‘peach pits’. The color possibilities are endless!
- Mary Jane Mucklestone
One of the reasons we enjoy working with Mary Jane and knitting her designs is due to her extensive background utilizing colorwork and steeks in her work. Many of us at Verb have yet to try a steeked shawl (or steeks at all!), and we've been intrigued and we figured you might feel the same. In case you are new to steeking, here is the lowdown: when working colorwork, it is really helpful to work only the rightside, and to work in the round. Steeks are used when wanting to work in colorwork and while working in the round on pieces with openings such as cardigans, shawls, and even swatches. Mary Jane will show you the ropes through Peach Pit. An added bonus of steeks is that it creates fringe. If you are making a cardigan, you may not want fringe, however, with a shawl, steeking provides the unique opportunity to work with a result of the technique as decoration. A win-win.
To design this piece, it was important to get a high level of contrast so the polka dots really popped. We all knew that we wanted to celebrate the Verb dye garden so we created Stardust, which is printed with our homegrown marigolds and paired it with bold, warm orange (Tiger Eye) and moody ochre (Lion's Mane). These colors are dyed with madder root, cutch wood, weld flowers, and rhubarb root. Nature is amazing!

When working with yarn dyed with indigo, it is common and natural for the blue dye to rub off on one’s hands while sewing. This is called crocking. Although the goods have been washed, it takes pressured contact to release the extra indigo dye. Your handwork is part of the indigo dyeing process. The blue dye can be removed with hot water and soap. From working closely with indigo dyed materials through the making process, typically, the excess dye has been removed, and the crocking will cease.
