Design & Sew Your Own Shift Dress with Cal Patch - Saturday, May 5th

Instructor: Cal Patch

Here’s your chance to make your own custom dress! In this one-day class, you will learn how to take your measurements and use them to draft a pattern for a simple sleeveless shift dress. Then we'll make "muslins" (fit samples) from our patterns, and have a group fitting session in which everyone will benefit from seeing various fit issues and how to correct them. Based on this, you'll make corrections to your pattern, and we will discuss fabric and styling options and construction techniques, so that at the end of class you are armed with all you need to embark on your finished dress project!

Please have (at least) beginner-level sewing skills.

Supplies:

For the pattern:
Pad or roll of paper, at least 14″ wide (can be newsprint, drawing paper, etc)
Pencil/eraser/sharpener
Scissors (for paper)
Ruler (ideally 2″x18″ clear plastic sewing ruler)
Tape Measure
Clear tape

For the muslin:
Sewing machine
2-3 yards (twice your desired dress length, plus about 6") muslin OR other light/medium-weight cotton woven fabric*
Thread
Basic sewing kit: scissors, pins & cushion, tape measure, seam ripper, tailor’s chalk

*Note: You are welcome to use a fabric other than muslin, which can most likely become a "wearable muslin", but the main purpose is as a fit sample

15% off class materials.

1 session / 6 hours, plus 30 minute lunch break

Date: Saturday, May 5th
Time: 11:00 am to 5:30 pm

Bio: Cal Patch has been a maker since she was a Girl Scout in the seventies. She sews, crochets, spins, embroiders, knits, prints, makes patterns, dyes… hence the name of her label: "hodge podge". Cal has taught all of these subjects for the past ten years, and loves showing people new skills. After seventeen years of being a New York City dweller, Cal recently relocated to the Catskills where she is becoming a crafty farmer. Her first book, Design-It-Yourself Clothes: Patternmaking Simplified, is out now from Potter Craft.

Cancellation policy: Please note, for this special event, you must cancel 7 days before the start date of your class in order to receive a full refund. We cannot honor any refunds within 7 days of the class start date unless we are able to fill the class from the waiting list.
