Japanese-style Mending as Utility and Embellishment with Jody Alexander: Saturday, August 29th - Zoom

NOTE: This class will be held over Zoom. To participate in a Zoom class, we will send you a link 24 hours before the class start time, which you will use to log in to a group class with Jody. It is a really fun way to connect. We recommend using a computer to join the class (rather than a phone) as the screen is bigger.

The last day to sign-up and have a kit shipped to you is Saturday, August 22nd at 10 am.

The last day to sign-up and pick-up a kit via Curbside Pick-up is Friday, August 28th at 10 am. If you would like to pick up your kit before class, please read our Curbside Pick-up policies and select Curbside Pick-up during checkout.

Japanese mending techniques are used to repair and strengthen garments and other textile items. But, when left visible the repairs are also decorative and add texture, line and color. In this workshop students will create a sampler of mending techniques seen in Japanese boro textiles and will then move on to repairing, or embellishing a garment or other textile item of their choice. Each student will bring an item that needs repair, or embellishing, and will apply one or more of the mending techniques learned in the class.

The instructor will bring her collection of Japanese boro textiles for inspiration. Students should bring a textile item that has a worn area that needs re-enforcing, a hole or tear that requires repair, a stain that needs covering, or an item that simply could use some stitcherly embellishment. This can be pants, a dress, a shirt or skirt, a table cloth, curtain, or other textile item.

Basic materials for the sampler will be provided by the instructor but students are encouraged to bring fabric swatches for patching and different kinds of thread to make their project personal and unique to them.

Included Materials:
+ Basic sampler materials: cloth for the sampler base, swatches of fabric, pearl cotton thread, and a handout.

    Required Materials:
+ Variety of hand sewing needles with different sized eyes
    + Pins
    + Scissors
+ A personal mending project or textile to embellish
    + Extra fabric for patching
    + Threads of all kinds

    Class Size:  12 students max.

    Date: Saturday, August 29th, 2020
    Time: 11:00 am - 5:00 pm (with a 30 minute lunch break)
