Announcing the 1st Edition of Range! Made of California-grown Rambouillet wool and milled at Wyoming-based Mountain Meadows, this is our first combed farm-yarn; it is 3-ply and due to the combing process the texture is smooth. We chose to work with farmer Lani Estill because she raises beautiful wool and because she is practicing carbon farming - this type of farming and ranching is designed to lower greenhouse gas emissions by capturing carbon within the soil by using compost in place of pesticides and tilling. Wool from farms committed to carbon farming has been coined climate beneficial wool.
In 2012, in Northern California, on the account of one sheep shearer, farmers, not having a market for their fleece, discarded over 8000 pounds of wool. Shocked to discover this and being a lover of wool and yarn, we formed The California Wool Project. The goal of this project is to support farmers and US mills as well as provide options for those who would like to try to knit and wear California-grown materials. We created our 1st yarn line, Pioneer, in hopes of many more, made with California wool. Then, came Flock. And now Range is our third line of California-grown wool yarn. We have a soft spot for yarn which knits to 5 stitch per inch; this weight of yarn is heavy enough to make a sweater, but just the right amount of warmth for the Bay Area's mild climate, or a layering piece if you live in a colder climate.
There is a limited amount of this yarn available. We encourage you to purchase all of the yarn required to make your intended project.
