Garment Construction: Sewing with Knits, Uptown Top: Coming Soon!

Instructor: Tasa Gleason

Let's learn to sew with knits!

Have you been wanting to try sewing with knits, but are hesitant to dive in without some guidance? This class will help you through the process of setting up your regular sewing machine with a ballpoint needle and a small zigzag stitch. We will play around with tension and stitch length to figure out what works best with the knit you have chosen.

You will be making our Uptown Top from the knit of your choice, with woven facings at the neck and arm openings. In the first class you will make some design choices about the finishing of your top and we will talk about things that commonly come up when sewing with knits.

Class will be held in 3 sessions:

Session 1:
 - take measurements to confirm the size you are making
 - make design choices about your garment
 - trace your pattern
 - draft a facing for your arm opening
 - talk about different kinds of knits and how they will sew up
 - NOTE: we will most likely not be sewing this 1st session, it is your choice if you would rather not bring your sewing machine

Session 2:
 - cut fabric for your top
 - set up your machine to sew with knits
 - test out your knit on your machine
 - start sewing body of  top

Session 3:
 - finish sewing body of top
 - complete top with woven facings

Prerequisites: This class is for the intermediate sewist. You should be very confident sewing with woven fabrics, including sewing curves and sewing with accurate and consistent seam allowance. This should not be your first garment, but it can be your first time sewing with knits.
