Stitching Stolen Lives: Amplifying Voices, Empowering Youth & Building Empathy Through Quilts by Sara Trail and Teresa Duryea Wong is an in-depth look at the mission and work of the Social Justice Sewing Academy Remembrance Project. Together, we remember the lives lost due to racial injustices, with an in-depth sharing of their story.

The Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA) compiled extraordinary portrait art quilts that memorialize the individuals and say their names, over and over. SJSA also works with young adults and teens to help find their voice through the art of fabric and quilting, shown through student gallery photography. By working with SJSA, students learn how to cut fabric and make quilt blocks, and along the way, find the strength to express the systemic problems that plague their everyday life through their artwork. This book shares stories and insight into the lives lost and the long overlooked, heartrending truths shared by teens and young adults.

On November 6th from 12pm - 1:30 pm Pacific, Verb will host an exhibit and book signing in person at the shop.

The exhibit will consist of 5 beautifully quilted banners memorializing individuals who have been killed due to social injustice. The author Sara Trail will be available to sign books during this time.

ABOUT SARA TRAIL:

Sara Trail learned to sew at the young age of 4, and is now a successful author, sewing teacher, and pattern and fabric designer. At age 13, she wrote a nationally published book, Sew with Sara, that teaches teens and tweens how to sew cute clothes and accessories for fun and profit. At 15, she starred in a nationally published DVD, Cool Stuff to Sew With Sara. She then designed two fabric collections, Folkheart and Biology 101, and a pattern collection with Simplicity, Designed with Love by Sara. Her pattern collection features prom dresses, backpack patterns, hoodies, and jackets as well as aprons and tote bags. While attending UC Berkeley, Sara created a quilt in memory of Trayvon Martin, and her love for sewing and passion for social justice intertwined. After graduating from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, she founded the Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA). As Founder of SJSA, Sara actively travels to facilitate lectures and workshops. She is also key in developing and implementing the artistic vision of the organization.
