Design your own clothes with Cal Patch!

Posted by Kristine Vejar on January 11, 2012 0 Comments

On January 29th we welcome a special guest teacher, Cal Patch is coming to Verb!

Cal Patch has been a maker since she was a Girl Scout in the seventies. She sews, crochets, spins, embroiders, knits, prints, makes patterns, dyes… hence the name of her label: "hodge podge". You can see what she’s up to at http://hodgepodgefarm.net

Cal has taught all of these subjects for the past ten years, and loves showing people new skills. Her first book, Design-It-Yourself Clothes: Patternmaking Simplified, was the coursebook for a class we offered last summer called "Design and Sew Your Own Clothes." Karen King took the class and made her very first skirt.

Now Cal is coming to teach us in person! We are so excited to have her, and we hope you will join us for the day.

In this all-day workshop, Cal will show you two projects using techniques from her book. We'll begin with a classic A-line skirt, and then proceed to a sleeveless shift dress*. Then we will play with transforming techniques like adding internal seams and "slash-and-spread", to customize your patterns into the styles you envision. With this foundation you can go on to making all kinds of garments, and a whole new wardrobe!

New Malabrigo Yarn & Lizzy House Fabric

Posted by Kristine Vejar on January 04, 2012 0 Comments

After a year of anticipation, we just received Malabrigo's newest base yarn, Arroyo, 100% superwash merino, sport weight. I love this weight of yarn, perfect for a layering piece here in the Bay Area.

Hedgehogs! Foxes! We also received a shipment of fabric designed by Lizzy House. I love her graphic sensibility and touch of whimsy.

Sometimes at Verb We Dye

Posted by Kristine Vejar on January 02, 2012 1 Comment

One of the very special things about Verb, is that we have an in-house natural dyeing studio.

When Kristine decided to build the current shop and studio, she did so with the intention that we could all share in the dyeing experience.  Both inside and outside the shop, we have room for creating everything from deep, madder reds, to bright indigo blues. Kristine has been doing production natural dyeing for the past 5 years. She'll share tips and tricks for obtaining a wide range of colors, creating light-fast colors, and striving for reproducible colorways.

This Saturday, January 7th, Kristine is teaching:

By understanding the basics of the natural dyeing process, you will be able to use the studio during lab hours, and to attend future dyeing classes teaching advanced techniques - such as over-dyeing and creating variegated yarns

Also, on the 3rd Sunday of every month, Kristine will warm the indigo pots, and give you the chance to dye with the beautiful shade of indigo blue. While she maintains the pots, you get to dip yarn, fiber, or fabric shades of beautiful indigo blue. This is called Indigo Labs.
