Ieri Shawl by Mara Licole, featuring AVFKW Floating, designed and knit this shawl for our Pro-Verbial Yarn (or Fiber) + Shawl Club. This beautiful pattern is now available for all to knit and enjoy. One of the things we love about Mara's designs us learning about what and who inspires her -- and that she often invites her audience to consider something meaningful while they knit.
For example, when discussing her inspiration for the Ieri Shawl, Mara writes:
"If you do an internet search for inspirational quotes about ‘yesterday’ you will find that most of them advise you to let go of yesterday. Marcus Aurelius, a Stoic Philosopher and Roman Emperor believed: “Tomorrow is nothing, today is late, the good lived yesterday.” Our yesterday’s should not be forgotten or thrown aside. Yesterdays are full of wisdom, valuable memories, and legacies. Ieri is the Italian word for ‘yesterday’. When you knit Ieri, I want you to remember the best of your yesterdays including the best lessons from your difficult yesterdays.
Ieri is knit side-to-side in a loose gauge to create an off-center triangle shape with lots of drape and can be styled various ways. This clever design allows the shawl to stay on your shoulders and be worn as a scarf. Work your way through garter stitches littered with eyelets, stripes of lace mesh, and a lace mesh border punctuated with a picot bind off. The pattern includes written instructions and a schematic.
Knit using only one skein of Floating, our absolutely softest yarn, this is a wonderful way to try a new color. Made of alpaca, cashmere, and silk, every stitch is a luxury to knit.
We created the color specially for Ieri and Mara, hence the colorway name, Mara. To celebrate the public release of this design, we have created a new palette featuring additional new colorways created especially for Mara and Ieri: Rose Quartz, Sibyl, and Alpine Lake. All colors are created by applying a light layer of dye over Floating made of natural grey alpaca.

When working with yarn dyed with indigo, it is common and natural for the blue dye to rub off on one’s hands while sewing. This is called crocking. Although the goods have been washed, it takes pressured contact to release the extra indigo dye. Your handwork is part of the indigo dyeing process. The blue dye can be removed with hot water and soap. From working closely with indigo dyed materials through the making process, typically, the excess dye has been removed, and the crocking will cease.
