Celebrate Summer by creating a happy, colorful bag using the eco-printing technique.
In this project, you will take a pre-treated organic cotton bag and place flowers, leaves, and onion skins onto the bag, wrap it into a bundle, and heat it in hot water to create a one-of-a-kind naturally dyed creation. This cute drawstring bag can be used as a project bag, as a produce bag, as a bulk bag. Use it to wrap gifts and give as a gift.
This bundle includes:
+ one pre-treated, un-dyed, ivory, organic cotton bag (12" x 15")
+ one wooden dowel (6" length)
+ one package of dried dyestuffs: purple plum leaves, yellow onion skins, marigolds, and weld (approx. 8g)
Supplement our dyes by visiting your local nursery and picking up fresh marigolds, coreopsis, and other pretty flowers. Or look to your own garden!
Additional Necessary Tools:
+ thread to securely wrap the bundle. In our studio, we use button & craft thread (and we reuse it for multiple dyebaths!). You can also use sewing thread or kitchen twine.
+ scissors
+ a stainless steel or enamel pot large enough to fit the dowel, dedicated to dyeing only. Visit your local goodwill, or use an old pot, etc
+ a stove or hotpot (this is ok to do in your kitchen)

If you would like to dive in more deeply to eco-printing and natural dyeing, please refer to our books The Modern Natural Dyer and Journeys in Natural Dyeing.
Please take care when working with natural dyes. Always use separate pots and tools dedicated to the dyeing process. Wear protective eyewear and gloves. By purchasing these materials you are agreeing to taking all responsibility when using.
When working with goods dyed with indigo, it is common and natural for the blue dye to rub off on one’s hands while sewing. This is called crocking. Although the goods have been washed, it takes pressured contact to release the extra indigo dye. Your handwork is part of the indigo dyeing process. The blue dye can be removed with hot water and soap. From working closely with indigo dyed materials through the making process, typically, the excess dye has been removed, and the crocking will cease.
