A Verb for Keeping Warm
Dyeing with Freshly Harvested Indigo Leaves - Saturday, August 3rd, 2024
Instructors: Adrienne Rodriguez, Kristine Vejar, and Sarah Ollikkala Jones
The indigo is ready to be harvested! Join us in our on-site educational dye garden and learn how to dye a silk bandana with freshly harvested indigo leaves.
Using their newest book, Journeys in Natural Dyeing, as a reference, Kristine, Adrienne, and Sarah will guide you through the process of growing Persicaria tinctoria (indigo), processing the freshly harvested leaves into dye, and dyeing with it to create gorgeous shades of aqua on silk.
This is a great process for beginners; it is quick, requires few tools, and provides stunning results.
All levels welcome.
Each student will receive the following:
+ One 21.5 x 21.5 silk bandana - prepared for dyeing
Please bring:
+ Plastic bag (to take home damp scarf)
Recommended additional items:
+ Notebook
+ Journeys in Natural Dyeing (If you would like to learn how to grow Persicaria tinctoria and reproduce these results on your own. Unfortunately, we are currently out of stock and the book is being reprinted. Check your local bookstore, Amazon, or the library.)

Adrienne and Kristine are the co-owners of AVFKW, and lead the on-site natural dyeing studio. In 2014, Adrienne and Kristine embarked on a journey to create a tiny indigo farm located in their small Oakland front yard. There they have practiced growing, extracting indigo pigment, dyeing with it and recording the process in their newest book, Journeys in Natural Dyeing, so others can try this incredible process from their home garden.
