THE JOURNEY: PROJECT PLANNING for LOVE and COMFORT

When Shawn started researching the perfect project, a friend came to mind who could use a little extra love and warmth right now. What better way to show care for a friend than to knit them a warm accessory made out of a special yarn, that will bring some cheer and coziness? Shawn knew they wanted to use a 100% wool yarn, and wanted this to be a quick project - substantial to wear, but not too much yardage to knit. So they landed on knitting a scarf using Horizon.

Horizon is a plush, soft yarn made from organic wool, grown by sheep who are lovingly stewarded by folks in New Mexico, and spun by more lovely people, cooperatively, in Vermont. It is a DK weight yarn and knits up at about 4.5 - 5 stitches per inch. Horizon has approximately 160 yards per 50 g skein.

Shawn plans to use the cheerful color Sun-Dappled. We make this color by first growing marigolds! Then, we harvest them, take their petals, and sprinkle them over the yarn. We heat the yarn and the margiold petals release their dye, resulting in little flecks of gold. We adore how this process preserves the essence of the flowers and the sunshine that helps them grow.

With the perfect yarn in mind, the next step was to find a pattern!

Looking through our Ravelry bundle of small shawl patterns, the perfect match appeared in High Line by Jennifer Shiels Toland.

The High Line is a textured, reversible shawl inspired by New York City's historic elevated railway, made up of "rails" of 1x1 ribbing, with squishy garter stitch echoing the tracks.

(There is also a hat version of this pattern - as shown in the photo above - in case you need an extra super quick project to whip up!)

Jennifer designed this pattern to use DK weight yarn. So Horizon is just the right fit.

(High Line would be equally delightful knit up in Pretzel or Graze!
More details on those options further down.)

This pattern is easily adaptable to make the most of your yarn with 3 sizes available.
Make a scarf, a small shawl, or a larger shawl - you choose!

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Scarf: 58" x 4.5"
Shawl (smaller size): 46" x 8"
Shawl (larger size): 64" x 12"

To knit each of these sizes, you will need approximately the following yardage:

YARDAGE
Scarf: 150 yds // (1 skein of Horizon)
Shawl (smaller size): 150 yds // (1 skein of Horizon)
Shawl (larger size): 300 yds // // (2 skeins of Horizon)

Make this pattern your own with different yarn choices!

For the softest and warmest possible scarf, make a High Line using Bread & Butter Pretzel.

Pretzel is made with 100% US merino wool and has a round, bouncy twist. It is extra-soft to wear around your neck and will keep even the chilliest breeze at bay. Pretzel comes in a palette of heathered colors that have been blended by hand and milled in the Carolinas.

The following colors are all part of our make-a-long palette:

Minnows
Jade Cove
Agave
Graphite
Cottontail
Dove
Clear Night

Pretzel contains 130 yards per 50 g skein.

For lovers of California wool, knit your version using Graze.

Made with a blend of Targhee, Rambouillet, Merino, and other fine wools, this light worsted weight yarn is next-to-skin soft. Grown in Santa Barbara, California by Cuyama Lamb, the sheep graze alongside California's golden hills, to mitigate wildfires. Listen to this episode on our Reverberate Podcast, and hear Jenya, the co-founder of Cuyama, describe their work - and how it feels to have people knit yarn using wool grown by Cuyama sheep. If you love wool, sheep, and stories of incredible people working to help the planet, then this yarn is for you.

So the bad news is that we only have one dyed color of Graze in stock.

BUT the good news is that the one dyed color is a freshly dyed batch of sapphire blue indigo blue sky!

(Undyed, yummy ivory Lighthouse is also in stock!)

And more good news is that we are beginning to dye a full palette of Graze.

So stay tuned!

Graze has 116 yards per 50 g skein.

Sometimes it is nice to choose the yarn you want to work with and let it guide you towards the right pattern.

Choose whichever yarn speaks to you - all three are beautiful and special offerings.
