Well it's been a minute since we last had a tried and true sock yarn but we have had one in the works for the last SIX YEARS. And it is finally ready!
So here's the story: In 2019 (maybe 2018?), we purchased a bale of California Rambouillet wool from Lani Estil that had been superwashed in the United States with the hope of making a sock yarn. We sent this bale to Kraemer in Pennsylvania.
Around this time, we received a small batch of yarn that had been milled in Italy designed especially for sock knitting. Because of its tight twist, (resulting in a bouncy, round yarn which showcases stitch definition beautifully), every time we pulled a strand of yarn from a cake it would coil and resemble a little doodle -- so we named it just that -- Doodle. And as soon as it ran out, we wished for more but as it was a limited run, we were unable to.
So we decided to use the California wool sitting in Pennsylvania to make a new batch of Doodle but then with the pandemic and life, the project kept getting pushed back. And then earlier this year, Kraemer said they would start charging us a storage fee. Fair. But really what was happening is that Kraemer was closing. So we decided to push ahead and finally mill a new, improved version of Doodle. Not only is the wool traceable (yay!) there is more yardage per skein!
Of course, while we milled this yarn specifically with making socks in mind, of course, it would also be great for any clothing and home wares you wish to be more resilient in the washing process. Examples include: shawls, blankets, pillow cases, baby and children's clothing.
~~~
(Please note, due to the Kraemer closure, we once again will have to figure out how to make a new batch. Therefore, at this time, we have a limited number of skeins, and once they're gone they're gone!)
Fall 2025 Palette - This first palette includes some old favorites such as Bonfire, Au Lait, and Indigo Blue Sky. And also includes some new colorways that are subtly variegated and speckled. The hope is that they will add a bit of excitement while you work without taking away from your stitch pattern.
Our local Fall flora inspired these colorways: Scarlet Maple reflects the Japanese Maple trees' vibrant Autumn leaves. Roasted figs are a favorite delicacy at this time of year, try them on a piece of toasted sourdough bread, and a drizzle of honey. Walking through the forest, the smell of evergreen Bay Laurel trees adds a freshness to every step.
While the wool used in this yarn has been superwashed, and may technically be able to be cleaned in the washing machine without felting, we highly recommend hand washing with cold water and pH neutral soap for maximum longevity.
~~~
Colors with a higher price are in a special category of dyeing at Verb because they are dyed with Indigo or require extra steps in the dyeing and washing process (hence the addition of Extra to their name). Thank you for your support!

CROCKING
When working with yarn dyed with indigo and with medium to dark shades of natural dyes (especially on slick fibers like mohair), it is common and natural for the dye to rub off on one’s hands while making. This is called crocking. Although the goods have been washed, it takes pressured contact to release the extra dye. Your handwork is part of the dyeing process. The dye can be removed with hot water and soap. From working closely with dyed materials through the making process, typically, the excess dye has been removed, and the crocking will cease.
~~~
ALWAYS use pH-neutral soap when blocking and washing natural dyes.
Please note the fiber content of the material you are working with, and follow the applicable instructions:
Cotton or linen - Machine washable on cool cycle. Lay flat to dry.
Superwash Wool - Machine washable on cool cycle, though hand wash recommended. Lay flat to dry.
Wool and Wool blends - Handwash only in lukewarm water. Lay flat to dry.
