Adorn this beautiful 100% linen handkerchief with doodles of flowers using our naturally-dyed embroidery floss. This is a beginner-friendly project.
The handkerchief is made by Fog Linen. Based in Japan, they source custom linen from Lithuania. Then, from the linen, they sew a bunch of sweet, simple accessories, clothing, and home goods - such as this handkerchief.
The floss included is dyed using roots, petals, and bark in our Oakland studio.
Each kit includes:
+ 1 Fog Linen Handkerchief (approx 18" x 18")
+ 3 lengths of AVFKW embroidery floss in three colors
There are five colorways to choose from.

Feel free to stitch anything you would like on your handkerchief. Here's how ours was made:
TOOLS used:
Sewline Marking Pencil
Embroidery Needles
Small Scissors
Using my favorite marking tool, The Sewline Marking Pencil, I drew the three large flowers.
The embroidery floss is composed of six strands.
To create the orange and green flowers, I threaded my needle with three strands of floss. For the very pale pink flower, I used two strands. I used a running stitch. For the center of each flower, I two strands of floss and satin stitch.
Then I drew the smaller loop-di-loop flowers. For these I used a single strand of floss and running stitch. Adding an 'x', with a single strand to each of the flower centers.
Easy peasy!
~~~
I used different amounts of floss, because it changes the thickness of the line I am stitching, adding depth and nuance to the drawing. This is a fun way to add a little more interest when using a very simple stitch, such as the running stitch. You can also combine colors of floss this way! Perhaps one strand of pale pink with two strands of orange, etc.
You can also add nuance and movement through your drawing by changing the size of your stitches.
Happy Stitching!
When working with fabric, thread, and fiber dyed with indigo, it is common and natural for the blue dye to rub off on one’s hands while sewing. This is called crocking. Although the goods have been washed, it takes pressured contact to release the extra indigo dye. Your handwork is part of the indigo dyeing process. The blue dye can be removed with hot water and soap. From working closely with indigo dyed materials through the making process, typically, the excess dye has been removed, and the crocking will cease.
