For indigo connoisseurs and those who honor hyper-local natural dyeing journeys, we have something very special to share with you today:
To celebrate Summer, we have created a limited number of aqua blue Shimmering Tussah skeins dyed with mature, fresh indigo leaves grown in our on-site dye garden.
Typically, indigo must go through a number of stages to dye yarn. In this case, as long as the plant is used immediately after harvesting, and we use silk, we can create this incredible, unusual shade of blue. We have a limited number of skeins due to the amount of indigo in our dye garden and this very small window of maturity. These skeins truly reflect the peak of Summer sun and warmth and can only be made at this time.
Due to how well this plant and technique work with silk, of course we instantly thought of using the ever-popular Shimmering Tussah yarn. A single skein includes nearly 1100 glorious yards of 2-ply silk yarn. It's subtle texture creates a unique, luxurious, diaphanous fabric. Use it on its own or combine it with another Verb yarn - how about holding it with a strand of Wild Bloom or Soft Current? Or something slightly thicker like Annapurna?
CROCKING
When working with yarn dyed with indigo and with medium to dark shades of natural dyes (especially on slick fibers like mohair), it is common and natural for the dye to rub off on one’s hands while making. This is called crocking. Although the goods have been washed, it takes pressured contact to release the extra dye. Your handwork is part of the dyeing process. The dye can be removed with hot water and soap. From working closely with dyed materials through the making process, typically, the excess dye has been removed, and the crocking will cease.
~~~
ALWAYS use pH-neutral soap when blocking and washing natural dyes.
Please note the fiber content of the material you are working with, and follow the applicable instructions:
Cotton or linen - Machine washable on cool cycle. Lay flat to dry.
Superwash Wool - Machine washable on cool cycle, though hand wash recommended. Lay flat to dry.
Wool and Wool blends - Handwash only in lukewarm water. Lay flat to dry.
