Sashiko is a form of functional embroidery, traditionally developed and used in Japan during the Edo period (1603 - 1868) and is still practiced today. It was often used to strengthen clothing to make it even more durable.

The designs are printed onto the fabric with washable ink. So once you have completed the stitching, toss it in the washing machine, and the print will dissolve, leaving your beautiful lines of stitches.

The sashiko samplers we have previously offered that you may be familiar with, are lighter in weight and smaller. We decided to add these fabrics to our collection as they are heavier in weight, perfect for cushions, curtains, lightweight jackets, bags, and patches. Also, the scale of the pattern is larger, notice Adrienne's hands in the photo, so this is a nice accompaniment to the sashiko samplers.

Choose the patterns which speak to you, select a sashiko needle, a few hanks of sashiko thread (natural, naturally-dyed by us, or by BUAISOU) and spend an afternoon stitching. Once the stitching is complete, machine wash the cloth to remove the ink, and sew the cloth into your desired project.

Great for beginners!
