This arched shawl begins at the center with only a few stitches while yarn over increases quickly expand the shape. Garter stitch short row wedges add length to one side forming rays that gradually increase in size. The repetitive knit stitches and rhythmic short rows are easy to work while still keeping your interest, a perfect travel project! Built in I-cord edges and an I-cord bind off outline the entire shape for a clean finish. - Stephen West

For the 2021 Winter Solstice, we created a special colorway named 400 Stars. Mesmerized by the variety of shades, I decided to carry Frond (silk / mohair) in 400 Stars with Even Tinier Annapurna (merino / cashmere) in the colorway Lighthouse, and chose the gorgeous pattern Dotted Rays by Stephen West. I loved watching the tiny pops of yellow stars intermingle with swathes of violet and indigo blue. It really did feel like I was knitting the night sky. Dotted Rays, once you knit a few repeats, is easy to memorize. Before you know it, this project is off the needles and will be wrapped around your neck, keeping you warm. - Kristine

CROCKING
When working with yarn dyed with indigo and with medium to dark shades of natural dyes (especially on slick fibers like mohair), it is common and natural for the dye to rub off on one’s hands while making. This is called crocking. Although the goods have been washed, it takes pressured contact to release the extra dye. Your handwork is part of the dyeing process. The dye can be removed with hot water and soap. From working closely with dyed materials through the making process, typically, the excess dye has been removed, and the crocking will cease.
~~~
ALWAYS use pH-neutral soap when blocking and washing natural dyes.
Please note the fiber content of the material you are working with, and follow the applicable instructions:
Cotton or linen - Machine washable on cool cycle. Lay flat to dry.
Superwash Wool - Machine washable on cool cycle, though hand wash recommended. Lay flat to dry.
Wool and Wool blends - Handwash only in lukewarm water. Lay flat to dry.
