Bring the beauty of nature and the expert artistry of Batik Tulis Kebon Indah into your home with our new Picture Window Quilt Kit. Sarah handcrafted this wonderful quilt using naturally dyed batik, natural linen, and naturally dyed sashiko thread.
Each piece of our naturally dyed batik from Java is so incredibly intricate and unique, one could spend a long time looking at the patterns and drawings created by the layers of wax and dye. There is already so much pattern, color, and story in each design that makes a wonderful quilt top for a wholecloth quilt, allowing the entire design to be seen.
The batik fabric is naturally-dyed by a women's collective in Java, Indonesia, named Batik Tulis Kebon Indah. Each pattern is hand-drawn onto the fabric with a tool called a canting and hot wax. The fabric is then dyed with locally foraged plants. The steps of applying wax and dyeing are repeated approximately 12-20 times before the wax is finally removed from the fabric, completing the process, and revealing the magical swirling layers of line and color.
The Picture Window Quilt kit includes enough fabric to create one 40" x 62" quilt:

- 2 yds [1.8 m] of 55" [1.6 m] wide Fabric B; 100% linen natural

When working with fabric, thread, and fiber dyed with indigo, it is common and natural for the blue dye to rub off on one’s hands while sewing. This is called crocking. Although the goods have been washed, it takes pressured contact to release the extra indigo dye. Your handwork is part of the indigo dyeing process. The blue dye can be removed with hot water and soap. From working closely with indigo dyed materials through the making process, typically, the excess dye has been removed, and the crocking will cease.
