A Verb for Keeping Warm
AVFKW X Kristine Vejar - The Sketch Quilt Bundle
Color
The Sketch Quilt sewing pattern was originally featured in Making magazine and is now available as a single pattern and fabric bundle.
When I approached this project, I wanted to use a sewing technique which would lend itself to the act of sketching. This is not so much an exercise in matching corners and seams as one might find in more traditional quilting, instead, it is about playing with design, balance, and the scale of the chocolate brown woven fabric versus the plain white fabric. I landed upon the free-form technique of strip piecing (sometimes referred to as strip quilting). I went for a more minimalist approach, but your sketch and quilt may be denser, with more strips, creating more lines. The technique of strip piecing is easily adaptable.
- Kristine
The fabric used to create the top of the quilt is made in the Great Rann of Kutch in India, a place where Kristine studied the incredibly rich history of creating beautiful and inspiring textiles. The fabric is handspun, handwoven, and naturally-dyed. The back of the quilt is cotton double-gauze -- a very soft cloth which is nice next-to-the-skin.
This bundle includes enough fabric to create one quilt Sketch Quilt measuring 42" x 54".
There are three colorway options for the contrasting colors found on the quilt:
+ black (used by Kristine in her quilt)
+ indigo blue
+ light brown acacia
*Due to variations, fabrics may not be an exact pattern match to the photo but will be in the color family as described.

When working with fabric, thread, and fiber dyed with indigo, it is common and natural for the blue dye to rub off on one’s hands while sewing. This is called crocking. Although the goods have been washed, it takes pressured contact to release the extra indigo dye. Your handwork is part of the indigo dyeing process. The blue dye can be removed with hot water and soap. From working closely with indigo dyed materials through the making process, typically, the excess dye has been removed, and the crocking will cease.
