Improvisational Quilting with Stacey Sharman

Posted by Kristine Vejar on February 18, 2013 0 Comments

Improvisational Quilting is a new class starting this weekend at Verb. Stacy Sharman will teach the concept and practice, of exploring colors and textures through the use of your all-knowing intuition. This can be a great way to expand you current practice. And to use the form of quilting in order to paint. There's a directness to this process that feels rather freeing. And, I think that one of the most exciting parts of the process, is to discover, that what you may start making, evolves, and has the freedom to evolve, into something you had yet to envision.

Stacey is a great teacher and guide. So if this feels at all daunting, I hope you will trust that she really will help you find just the right combination of color, form, and technique.

This class is great for anyone who has taken our Intro to Quilting class or has 10 hours of quilting experience.

Quilting doesn't always have to be about rulers and matching your points. Come and explore.

Both of the quilts in this post are by Stacey Sharman. The top quilt is currently displayed in the Easy bay Modern Quilters Quilting Show, Stitch Modern.

Bunny Love

This morning Jessie and I bundled up Marcel in Karen's Valentine's Day quilt for a little photo shoot.

Here's the deceptively simple and cheery front of the quilt. The fabric, from Robert Kaufman's Love Collection, is pre-printed with one-yard panels of the word "LOVE." Since it's actually one piece, this is an excellent project for beginners, or quilters who want something quick and fun. If you've always wanted to try quilting, February could be your month. We've got Intro to Quilting starting the 21st, and for students of all levels, our Improvisational Basketweave Class starting the 24th.

Marcel would like everyone to take note of the ostriches on the back.

Stitch Modern 2013

Saturday night I went to the opening of Stitch Modern 2013. Put on by the East Bay Modern Quilt Guild, this annual show presents the quilts made by those in the guild, and is quite a showcase of talent and exploration.  The quilt above, made by Daniel Rouse, is on display, as well as many more. I have been following Dan online, watching the development of this piece, it was wonderful to see it in person. It's quite large!
