Join us for the 13th year of Romi's Mystery Shawl Knit-a-long!
Right now, Romi is knitting and designing a gorgeous shawl pattern. She will then release portions of this pattern, once a week, over a month. When you embark on this adventure, you do not know what the finished shawl looks like - that's the mystery! As you receive the portions of the pattern, the clues, and knit them, the shawl will emerge before your eyes.
Upon first hearing this, you may think "that's wild!" The good news is that there is a group of very enthusiastic people who have participated in this journey over the years - some all thirteen years! And they meet on Ravelry for a lively discussion so feel free to join them or go solo!

ROMI'S 2025 INSPIRATION
Some of my fondest memories are the days I took the Golden Gate Ferry into San Francisco from Marin County, passing by Angel Island. This year’s mystery is inspired by the most beautiful of those days: fresh cool air, crisp breeze, deep blue water, and wisps of fog playing peekaboo with the sun.
Romi will be knitting her shawl using Floating in Current and Frond in II dream of Possibility.

Choose from the following yarns:
Floating - a blend of alpaca, cashmere, and silk, our absolute softest yarn. Float away stitch by stitch as you knit! .
Rumor - its iridescent shine is irresistible. We only offer this yarn (70% merino - 30% silk) for special occasions - so this is a nice opportunity to try it out!
Annapurna - a longtime Verb classic, made of merino and cashmere. Easy to knit and wear.
Frond - For the first time ever, one of the above base yarns will be paired with our luscious silk mohair yarn. Sensitive to mohair, no problem! Email us and we will create a non-mohair kit for you.
~~~
All yarn is dyed using plants in our Oakland studio - choose from the following colors:
Current (Floating) or True Blue (Annapurna & Rumor) + I dwell in Possibility - cool indigo reflecting the water and sky and the feeling of expansive possibility when looking across these reflective mediums.
Habanero + Cara Cara - a spicy pepper meets refreshing citrus warm. These sister shades are challenging to sum up in one word; a blend of grapefruit and hibiscus with hues of deep peach.
Lamb's Ear + Lamb's Ear - named after the namesake plant, a shade of relaxing Spring green with soft fur covering its leaves. A wonderfully, effervescent subtle green that is very difficult to photograph. This color shifts easily with the light closely emulating the ways in which nature responds to sunlight. We've done our best here. Expect a shade of green that is clear and reflective. Kind of sage-y pistachio.
There are a limited number of kits - once they're gone, they're gone. So jump in and purchase your kit!
CROCKING
When working with yarn dyed with indigo and with medium to dark shades of natural dyes (especially on slick fibers like mohair), it is common and natural for the dye to rub off on one’s hands while making. This is called crocking. Although the goods have been washed, it takes pressured contact to release the extra dye. Your handwork is part of the dyeing process. The dye can be removed with hot water and soap. From working closely with dyed materials through the making process, typically, the excess dye has been removed, and the crocking will cease.
~~~
ALWAYS use pH-neutral soap when blocking and washing natural dyes.
Please note the fiber content of the material you are working with, and follow the applicable instructions:
Cotton or linen - Machine washable on cool cycle. Lay flat to dry.
Superwash Wool - Machine washable on cool cycle, though hand wash recommended. Lay flat to dry.
Wool and Wool blends - Handwash only in lukewarm water. Lay flat to dry.
